COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE  JOIN OUR CSA

OUR MISSION

Just Roots creates pathways that empower communities to develop access to local, sustainably grown fruits and vegetables.
WE CARRY OUT OUR MISSION THROUGH:

EDUCATION

We collaborate with schools and community organizations to provide educational programming that empowers indviduals with the skills, resources, and knowledge to be sustainable gardeners and farmers.

We offer two 8-week educational programs in sustainable urban gardening/farming (one session per week). If you’re interested in participating in our next session, please contact us at info@justrootschicago.org.

First Session: May 6-June 24th

Second Session: August 5-September 23rd

SUSTAINABLE
FARMING

We operate a 1/4 acre farm on Chicago’s south side and use organic practices to grow culturally relevant fruits and vegetables for the local community. In 2018, 50% of our produce went to local food pantries, while the other 50% was sold to local farmers markets and households through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. COMMUNITY
Development

We believe that no organization or entity can create a sustainable food system on their own. That is why we build partnerships with individuals, organizations, and businesses committed to grassroots community development. Through these partnerships, we strive to increase social and economic opportunities for community members.

EDUCATION

We facilitate on-site educational programming for individuals and groups interested in developing FARMING/GARDENING SKILLS and experiential knowledge about making food choices that are good for their community and the environment.

We offer two 8 week educational programs for adult learners in sustainable urban gardening/farming (one session per week). Through this program, you will develop the skills and knowledge to be an accomplished sustainable gardener. If you’re interested in participating in our next session, please contact us at info@justrootschicago.org

First Session: May 6-June 24th

Second Session: August 5-September 23rd

SUSTAINABLE

FARMING

We work with local community organizations to provide people living in food insecure communities with access to local, sustainably grown fruits and vegetables. We also run a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that allows people from all over Chicago to receive produce from our farm on a weekly, bimonthly, or monthly basis.

OUR STORY

Just Roots Chicago was created in the Fall of 2017 when co-founders Sabrina Poulin and Sean Ruane began to see how large groups of people were unable to access local, sustainably grown produce because of socioeconomic, educational, and cultural barriers. They began to think critically about ways they could work together to reduce barriers and create pathways for people of all backgrounds to access food that’s good for their family, their community, and the environment.

After one year of operation as a non-profit urban farm on Chicago’s south side, Just Roots distributed over 4,000 lbs of local, sustainably grown produce and provided free educational programming to over 300 student and adult learners.
